Research and Innovation
Health Services Laboratories (HSL) offers an extensive, internationally recognised breadth of knowledge and expertise in research, innovation and development, from basic research through novel laboratory-developed assays to extensive clinical trial portfolios.
Research and Innovation (R&I) is driven by expert clinicians and healthcare scientists connected to a network of NHS teaching hospitals, academic institutions, industrial partners and charitable foundations. Our staff have leading roles in biobanking, research and teaching, both locally and overseas.
We are proud that R&I plays an important role for HSL staff when working towards higher education qualifications, where R&I projects make up a component of the award. These projects often contribute to developments in the clinical service.
HSL has a firm commitment to supporting and maintaining new and existing R&I activities, providing a robust framework to successfully deliver next generation developments into clinical practice.
As a pathology service provider to UCLH and the Royal Free London, the HSL R&I team have responsibility for meeting our partner trusts’ turnaround times for clinical trial set-up. The team liaise with the wider company, from laboratories to IT and couriers, to ensure research studies can be delivered. The team have experience of facilitating studies for NHS trusts, academics, commercial companies, and government agencies including UKHSA. Research and innovation at a glance
- In 2023 we reviewed and approved 212 clinical studies.
- We set up bespoke pathways for academic research across multiple disciplines from genetics to infection sciences. We can provide costings and solutions suitable for grant applications.
- We work with commercial companies and academic spin outs to facilitate clinical studies through our UKAS accredited laboratories and highly experienced scientific staff.
