Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Women, Maria Caulfield MP, recently met the maternity team at UCLH to discuss the importance of women getting into STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) roles.
Ms Caulfield, herself a former nurse, visited the HSL POCT lab situated in the maternal foetal assessment unit in UCLH’s Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing, where she met Biomedical Scientist, Elisa Tammaro.
The lab tests two hormones, free HCG beta and Pappa-a, which are used for screening all eligible pregnant women’s babies for Down’s, Edwards or Patau’s syndrome.
The Health Minister asked Elisa about her role as BMS as well as wanting to understand all about the processes involved.
